Newly filed bill could allow sales tax increase for transit via fall referendum

Feb. 24. A bill introduced Monday morning by Republican Senators Bill Rabon, David Craven and Vickie Sawyer, would allow Mecklenburg commissioners to place a referendum on the ballot asking voters to raise sales taxes by 1 percentage point, to 8.25 percent.

The managers of Mecklenburg County, the City of Charlotte, and the towns of Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville, Mint Hill and Pineville, representing 97 percent of the county, applauded the filing of Senate Bill 145. Senators Bill Rabon, David Craven, and Vickie Sawyer sponsored the bill.

The money generated would be used to help pay for a $25 billion transportation plan that includes new rail lines, bus routes and roads.

“We still have a lot of work to do, but having a bill filed is an important milestone – one that we have been working towards for years. I look forward to the work in front of us, with our partners, to deliver on a future that will make a difference for all of us because it will make a difference in the quality of life for our region.”

  1. Read the bill carefully before you consider voting for it. If charlotte decides that the red line is not feasible, they can cancel at their discretion and utilize the funds as they see fit.

Once again a no win for North Mecklenburg and good money thrown after bad.
