Lisa Mayhew-Jones new leader of Smithville Community Coalition

Dec. 22. Lisa Mayhew-Jones, one of the founders of the Smithville Community Coalition when it was re-launched in 2011, is the new executive director. She replaces Willie Jones who passed away this past spring.

The Smithville Community Coalition (SCC) was originally founded in 1968, by long-time leaders in the Smithville Community before its annexation to the Town of Cornelius. The SCC is a nonprofit organization leading the efforts to save Smithville from gentrification and displacement through a comprehensive revitalization plan.

Smithville is the largest intact historical African American community in Mecklenburg County.

The SCC is managing the revitalization of Smithville, including new affordable housing.

  1. Lisa has been in the interim leadership role at SCC. It is great to have her in the permanent role as this project evolves. I look forward to continuing to work with her in her official role as Executive Director. Congratulations and best wishes to her!
