History

Shull’s Mill began around 1835 as a gristmill owned and operated by Phillip Shull. The town of Shull’s Mill was a small farming community and stopping place on the toll road from Valle Crucis to Blowing Rock. Boom times for Shull’s Mill occurred around 1919 after the railroad made it more easily accessible.

The main residence, a mid-century round house designed by Gilbert Spindel in 1972, features three bedrooms, 2.5 baths, a spacious great room with a custom fireplace with slate floor, as well as a kitchen, office and music room. The layout centers around an 18 foot tall dining room with transom windows and yet another slate floor.

The Shull’s General Store, circa 1860, has been restored, with the original wide plank floors and feather board siding intact. It includes a kitchen, full bath, a guest suite upstairs, and two additional two baths downstairs.

A six-bay horse barn, renovated in 2018 into a 1,700 square foot event venue with brick paver floors, chandeliers and vintage sconces, dates back to 1850.

Another structure is the original Shull family home, repurposed over the years as a garden house.
