June 8. There are three informational meetings on the Kannapolis Downtown Revitalization Master Plan planned in June. Two will be held from 6-7 pm on June 20 and June 29, at Kannapolis City Hall; a third will be during a meeting of Downtown Kannapolis Inc. June 16, also at City Hall. All three meetings are open to the public.
Last September the City purchased approximately 50 acres of property and 80 buildings in the downtown core from billionaire David Murdock. Since then, City Council members and staff have been working with the Development Finance Initiative at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Government to strategize around plans to revitalize downtown.
DFI has gotten input from City Council members as well as market and site analyses to prepare the plan. Components will include proposing types of uses and locations for anchors that will drive people to the downtown such as a sports and entertainment complex and performing arts center, as well as recommendations for residential, retail, office and restaurants.
