Colonial spill much larger than previous estimate

July 22. Colonial Pipeline says the gasoline spill in Huntersville was actually 47,600 barrels—2 million gallons—more than twice previous estimates. The spill, first identified on Aug. 14, 2020, is the worst in North Carolina.

Colonial says it has recovered more than 35,500 barrels to date, approximately 75 percent of the updated release estimate.

“We will be here for as long as it takes to remediate the location,” Colonial said in a press release. Ongoing testing (in place since August 2020) has confirmed no impacts to water supply wells.

The pipeline company said it is spending $50 million on upgrades to prevent future leaks.

Colonial announced the revised estimate after a Mecklenburg County judge approved a nearly $5 million settlement of a state lawsuit. The order required Colonial Pipeline to produce an updated estimate.
