Long-time NC senator, Fletcher Hartsell, indicted

June 28. It’s a sad day in Concord. Criminal charges have been filed against NC Sen. Fletcher Hartsell concerning alleged misuse of campaign funds. Hartsell, 69, who opted not to run for reelection, was the subject of a lengthy investigation by the State Board of Elections over campaign finance reports. A year ago, the board decided there was “reason to believe” that Hartsell, a long-time attorney in Concord, improperly used campaign funds to pay personal expenses. The board referred the case to prosecutors in Wake County, where a grand jury said there is reason to indict the senator. Hartsell, who is himself an attorney with Concord-based Hartsell & Williams, was charged with three counts of certifying a campaign document as correct when he knew it was wrong.
