‘Great Race,’ named for the 1960s movie, will return to Mooresville in 2025

July 2. The 2025 Hemmings Motor News Great Race will stop in Mooresville next year, the first time since 2021. The premiere old car rally features more than 100 antique automobiles during a nine-day, 2,300-mile event.

The race will start in St. Paul, Minn., on Saturday, June 21, and end in Irmo, SC on Sunday, June 29, 2025.

There are more than 525 people just in the entourage, a boon for downtown businesses.

The Great Race is not a speed race, but a time/speed/distance rally. The vehicles, each with a driver and navigator, are given precise instructions each day that detail every move down to the second. They are scored at secret checkpoints along the way
and are penalized one second for each second either early or late. As in golf, the lowest score wins.

Local sponsors

The event is sponsored and organized by the Mooresville Downtown Commission, Mooresville Convention & Visitor Bureau, the North Carolina Auto Racing Hall of Fame and the Town of Mooresville

A 1912 Haynes, a 1913 Chevrolet, a 1916 Hudson and a 1918 American LaFrance are the oldest cars scheduled to be in the 2025 Great Race.
